An Introduction to Meditation: Meditation Facts & Tips FAQ
What is meditation?
Meditation is the process of consciously clearing the mind’s thoughts. The goal is to go within one’s mind to focus on the vibration or energy one desires. (ie; peace, clarity, enlightenment, stillness.)
How do I meditate?
The beauty of meditation is that it forces one to be present in the moment and become in tune with one’s body. In order to get to a state of meditation one must first focus on their breathing.
Take deep and long breaths, while exhaling any other cluttered thoughts. The constant and intentional flow of fresh oxygen allows the body to get into a state of peace and tranquility.

What if I can’t focus my mind?
No worries! Meditation is a process. This means that it is a daily practice. Do not be discouraged if you can’t quite focus your thoughts just yet or find yourself getting distracted. Keep going!
Practice meditating for a few minutes each day and gradually grow overtime. Aim for 1-5 minutes each time, 1-3 times a day. The more the merrier!
Eventually you will be able to meditate for more extended periods of time. It takes repetition to make something a habit.
Are there different kinds of meditation?
Yes! Though many vary, there are 2 main forms of meditation. The difference lies in the intentions behind each form of meditation.
- Attention-Focused Meditation
This form of meditation concentrates on a specific thought, visualization, sound, or mantra during meditation. These can include guided meditations, manifestation meditations, and group meditations.
- Present-Focused Meditation
Also known as open-monitoring meditation. This form of meditation focuses on one’s present awareness of self. This includes one’s environment, feelings, or thoughts.
What are guided meditations?
Guided meditations are when individuals utilize an outside source to help focus their meditation. This is ideal for beginners of meditation as well as for those who like to meditate in groups. It allows one to practice training their mind with the assistance of another person, musical soundtrack, or recording. Many people enjoy falling asleep or working out to guided meditations as a means of reprogramming their subconscious thought patterns.
When is the best time to meditate?
The best times of day to meditate are early mornings (5am-7am), mid-afternoons, and right before bedtime. This is because the part of your brain that is responsible for your creativity and subconscious programming is most active during these times.
During the day is ideal when meditating in nature because the sun helps active one’s pineal gland. The pineal gland, most known as our ‘third-eye chakra’ is responsible for producing and regulating hormones like melatonin (the sleepy chemical) and serotonin (the happy chemical).
Sunlight activates the pineal by catalyzing its production of serotonin in the brain. This is particularly why those who suffer from depression or anxiety can greatly benefit from practicing meditation. When meditating outside, it is recommended to meditate during the early mornings when the sun’s rays are less intense.
What exactly is mental programming?
Mental programming is simply the act of training one’s mind to match a given belief system or train of thought.
We are constantly being mentally programmed both overtly and covertly through media, social norms, and our daily interactions. The goal is to make sure that we have agency in the thoughts we choose to think and the emotions we choose to feel.
What are some other ways we can reprogram our minds?
Mindful Meditation
Meditation allows individuals to clear their mental headspace of negative thoughts, focus their energy, and allows room for the positive thoughts to enter.
